Project Title: Archive of the Unreal (Entartete Kunst)
Short Description: An archive that compiles music, books, and artists who were either banned at some point or died for their works, ethnicities, or orientations.
"Degenerate Art"
Something that's always fascinated me (and probably put me on a watchlist) is topic of institutionally-banned content-- particularly content that was once banned and since un-banned as cultural norms change or adapt. One the most well-known examples was the purge of content in Nazi Germany where many artists were labelled traitors or degenerates.
This weird state of un-acceptable rendered many works invisible or unreal at some point in time, and so, for my project, I decided to create an archive dedicated to various forms of media that experience this state, both in those times and in modern times.
Below are some stills of the site, for easier access. For the organization / aesthetic, I tried to go for a very clinical approach. I put the entries through a randomizer and tried to remove any major bits of identification. This way, the question for the viewer is, why were these entries banned at one point in time? But there's no answer unless said viewer actively reviews them.
